CAES Award winners provide perspective on the contributions made by members to the understanding of important issues faced in the agricultural, food, resource and environmental economics, or farm management disciplines.
How to Submit
For each award listed below, information on eligibility, criteria, rules, due dates, and where and how to submit is provided below.
- Submit the nomination by email to the contact person and email address provided for each award.
- Ensure all documents and information requested is included with the nomination.
- Winners are selected according to the CAES Policy and Procedures Manual.

CAES Fellows
With its Fellows award the CAES recognizes excellence in performance demonstrating continuous distinguished contributions to the advancement of food, agricultural or resource economics, and substantial contributions to institution building and the Canadian food, agricultural and resource economics profession.

Eligibility
- Nominees must be current members of the CAES and members of the society for at least ten years.
- Posthumous nominations are accepted.
Criteria
- Excellence in performance demonstrating continuous distinguished contributions to the advancement of food, agricultural or resource economics, and
- Substantial contributions to institution building and the Canadian food, agricultural and resource economics profession.
Rules
- Nominations may be made by any member of the society.
- Nominations must consist of a completed Fellows nomination form, four letters of support for the nomination with at least two being from CAES members. The letters should include documentary evidence as to the character, training, experience and accomplishments of the nominee.
- To be eligible for consideration, nominations, including all documentation, are to be delivered to the current Society President indicated in the Call for Nominations on the CAES website and CAES newsletter.
- Unsuccessful nominations may be re-documented and resubmitted in a subsequent year.
Selection
- A Fellows election subcommittee selects one or more CAES Fellows from among the nominations.

Publication of Enduring Quality
This award recognizes an article at least 10 years in circulation that has provided enduring quality to the profession of agricultural, food, resource and environmental economics, or farm management.
Eligibility
- Nominees must be current members of the CAES.
- Peer nominations are typical, but self-nominations will be considered.
Criteria
- Publication (article, book, chapter, in the CJAE or elsewhere) that has had a significant impact on agricultural, environmental or resource economics in Canada and has been available for 10 years or more.
Rules
- Nominations may be made by any member of the society.
- Nominations must consist of the author(s), reference of the publication, and short nomination statement (maximum of one single-spaced page) describing the publication’s contributions to the profession.
- Be as specific as possible when describing the enduring nature of the article and its overall contribution (e.g., shaped policy, new empirical methodology, unique data set, etc.)
- Unsuccessful nominations may be re-documented and resubmitted in a subsequent year.
Selection
- The CAES Awards committee selects one or two winners from among the nominations, according to the guidelines outlined in the CAES Policy and Procedures Manual

Outstanding Master’s Thesis
Eligibility
- A nominee must have earned completed the thesis and earned the degree within the period from January 1 to December 31 of the year before the award is conferred.
Criteria
- A formal written thesis nominated by agricultural economics and related social science disciplines in which the institution offers a master’s degree. (Project reports will not be considered.)
Rules
- Submissions must be made in writing by the chair of the department, graduate program chair or equivalent officer.
- The internal institutional selection processes are the responsibility of the endorsing official.
Each institution may submit up to two nominations for the award. - Each institution must provide the names of two volunteer reviewers (one for each nomination) who have agreed to be part of the reviewer pool for all theses.
- The reviewers shouldn’t have any conflict of interest with the submitted theses and will be asked to rank three theses.
- Reviewers can be from the department or external e.g., government departments, non-profit and for-profit organizations.
Selection
- The competition recognizes an overall winner and as many as two honourable mentions.
Initial screening is based upon four criteria: originality; significance of the study; overall quality outcomes; and accomplishments from the thesis. - The jury attaches importance to an original approach and insight; the relevance of the research to a scientific understanding of the issues covered; and the significance of the thesis in relation to issues in agricultural economics and its interest for the public.

- Nomination materials must be provided by the chair of the department, graduate program chair or equivalent officer.
- The nomination materials must include:
- An electronic copy of the written thesis in PDF (Portable Document Format).
- A letter from the department chair or advisor that includes the full name of the applicant, the applicant’s email address, the full name of the supervisor(s), the year the applicant graduated and the full name of the program of the degree granting unit.
- A volunteer reviewer with her/his email address for each thesis submitted to the competition.

Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis - Next award given in 2023
Eligibility
- A nominee must have earned completed the thesis and earned the Doctoral degree within the three-year period to December 31 before the year the award is conferred.
Criteria
- A formal written thesis nominated by agricultural economics and related social science disciplines in which the institution offers a doctorate degree.
Rules
- Submissions must be made in writing by the chair of the department, graduate program chair or equivalent officer.
- The internal institutional selection processes are the responsibility of the endorsing official.
- Each institution may submit up to two nominations for the award.
- Each institution must provide the names of two volunteer reviewers (one for each nomination) who have agreed to be part of the reviewer pool for all theses.

Undergraduate Book Prize
Eligibility and Criteria
- A nominee pursuing a degree in agricultural, food or resource economics, or farm management, or related fields of study at the undergraduate level.
Rules and Selection
- The internal institutional selection processes are the responsibility of the endorsing official.
- Nominations must be made in writing by the chair of the department, graduate program chair or equivalent officer.
- One nomination (the winner) is accepted per institution.
- Nominations must include the winner’s full name, permanent mailing address, and the reason for his/her selection.
- Winners receive a cash prize and a one-year membership in the society.

Accepting an Award
Winners are asked to attend the annual awards banquet to accept the award in person. Student travel expenses may be covered by the society depending on the allocations for the travel grants in a given year. Supervisors of the winners will be informed in advance of the meeting so that to travel arrangements can be made with the department if needed. If a winner is unable to accept an award in person, the certificate and any cash prizes will be mailed to directly to the winner or the nominating department.
