Announcing the 2019 Master’s Thesis Award Winners!
The Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award recognizes excellence in the Master’s program and encourages the study of agricultural economics, resource economics and farm management at the Masters level. This year we are pleased to announce one winner and two honourable mentions.
Winner: Yangzhe Cao
Thesis Title: Identifying the Impacts of a Land Use Policy: A Case Study of Okotoks. Supervisors: Dr. Brent Swallow and Dr. Feng Qiu, Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology, University of Alberta.
Praise for the winning thesis:
This thesis is at a high level of sophistication and it could easily result in two high quality journal articles, a commendable achievement for an M.Sc. thesis. It is the most relevant to the public, many of which have strong feelings about the nature of development in rural areas. This work is just as useful for the field of agricultural economics, which will find it to be a useful benchmark against future case-studies in similar circumstances. This is an excellent example of applied economics research on a relevant land-use policy issue.
Honourable Mentions: Patrick Eleazer Ndolo and Katherine Jones
- Patrick Eleazer Ndolo: Farmland Values and Conservation Activity in Manitoba. Supervisor: Dr. Chad Lawley, Department of Agribusiness & Agricultural Economics, University of Manitoba
- Katherine Jones: Environmental Concerns and Willingness to Pay for Genomic Technologies in the Canadian Dairy Industry. Supervisors: Dr. Getu Hailu and Dr. Yu Na Lee, Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Guelph
