CAES Mask Protocol at the 2023 Canadian Agri-Food Policy Conference:
Ottawa Public Health strongly recommends mask use in all indoor public settings and crowded outdoor settings to help limit transmission, protect the capacity of pediatric care, and reduce risks for severe illness requiring hospitalization. Wearing a mask is an easy way to help protect yourself and your colleagues. In-person attendees at the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Conference are strongly encouraged to wear a tight-fitting, multi-layer mask to help protect themselves and those around them in indoor conference spaces. A medical-style mask is best (e.g., KN-95 or better). This recommendation is for the well-being of all participants. A limited number of masks will be available for pick up at the registration desk.

The workshop topics related to Dr. James Rude’s work will include: Rent Seeking, Canada’s Business Risk Management Programs, Total Factor Productivity, Supply Management, Balancing Environmental Program Goals and International Trade.
Speakers will include: Alan Ker (Michigan State University), Aleks Schaefer (Oklahoma State University), Scott Pellow (AAFC), Bruno Wichmann (University of Alberta), James Vercammen (University of British Columbia), Bruno Larue (Laval University), Ryan Cardwell (University of Manitoba) and Derek Brewin (University of Manitoba).
OVERVIEW
Since it was first held in 2011, the Annual CAES-SCAE Agri-food Policy Conference has become the policy event for the agri-food sector. Conference attendees and presenters consist of a blend of academics, policy makers and industry stakeholders with knowledge of critical issues and potential policy solutions.
It is difficult to deny that current agriculture and food markets are being challenged. In this conference we attempt to address some of the issues that are disrupting agriculture and food markets, in particular the issues that will likely need to be addressed with future policy attention. One of the complexities in dealing with disruption is the interface between scientific research and policy making. To that end this conference includes many different scientists with their own approaches to identifying critical issues. Hopefully this generates significant opportunity for discussion about policy implications.
Some of the key issues to be discussed will include the War in Ukraine; Importance of Water Security for Food Security; Reducing Global Demand for Fertilizer, Energy Markets, Inflation in the General Economy, In Crops, In Livestock and In Fertilizer, Food Security Challenges and Climate Change. Importantly, student research will be promoted throughout the conference in terms of a poster competition and presentations.
In addition, all conference participants will have the opportunity to participate in some hands-on sessions on the afternoon of January 27 and an important James Rude Memorial Workshop on January 28, 2023 (focusing on Canadian agricultural policy, rent seeking behaviour, international trade and other areas of interest to James (details to follow)
