Assistant Professor, Department of Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics
The Department of Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics, in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba, seeks highly-qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess, or be nearing completion of, a Ph.D. in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Economics, Business, Finance or a related area. The successful applicant will have strong analytical skills, with demonstrated expertise in advanced quantitative and statistical methods applied to the business and economics of food and agriculture (must include advanced econometrics or statistics courses in Ph.D. program), with a proven research track record of high-quality journal publication or strong potential. The Department is interested in applicants researching topics in agribusiness and agricultural economics, particularly applicants with interests in quantitative aspects of agribusiness, and ideally finance, but the department is also open to related areas. Some specific quantitative analysis areas in addition to econometrics could include areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, simulation, cloud computing, or analysis of precision agriculture data.
As part of their application, candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by high-quality journal publications, working papers meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong letters of reference. Evidence of excellence in teaching can be provided through teaching accomplishments, teaching evaluations (if available), a detailed teaching statement, and in letters of reference. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated in the application materials.
The successful applicant is expected to:
- Develop an internationally-recognized research program, which will include publishing in top-ranked peer-reviewed scientific journals and securing competitive research funding from government (national and international), industry, and other sources.
- Contribute to the development and evolution of courses and programs and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervise graduate student research projects.
- Contribute service to the scientific community, as well as to the province, university, faculty, and department.
- Have excellent communication skills and be able to work well individually and collegially within a diverse interdisciplinary environment.
- Engage with government, industry, and other stakeholders.
The Department offers accredited undergraduate and MSc programs, and faculty members supervise Ph.D. students in the Department of Economics and through the University’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. The Department has several endowed fellowships for graduate student funding and there are excellent opportunities to work with graduate students and to actively participate in the graduate program. The Department works closely with the Department of Economics and the I.H. Asper School of Business and is seeking to expand this cooperation.
