Announcing the Winners of the Outstanding CJAE Article Award (Volume 66)

May 6, 2019/in Uncategorized

The Outstanding CJAE Article Award recognizes achievement in agricultural economics, resource economics and farm management for articles appearing in the journal of the Society, the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics. All articles appearing in the journal and proceedings of the Society in the year preceding recognition are eligible for consideration.

Winning Article:

Authors:  Di Fang and Timothy J. Richards

Title:  New Maize Variety Adoption in Mozambique: A Spatial Approach

Issue: Volume 66, Issue 3, pages: 469-488 (September 2018)

Praise for the winning article:

The authors use an innovative approach to analyze an important issue: the adoption of new varieties to improve farmers’ productivity and incomes. Introducing spatial effects with social interactions is a relatively new approach in modeling adoption. They use an original and relevant approach to better understand how social learning works in disseminating agricultural innovations in developing countries. The important, though often neglected, effect of information sharing is formalized and measured in this paper. These results are useful in informing agricultural policy in areas such as extension services, on which so much government and NGO money is spent.

Honourable Mention

Author:  Peter Slade

Title:  The Effects of Pricing Canadian Livestock Emissions

Issue:  Volume 66, Issue 2, pages: 305-329 (June 2018)

“My favourite thing about being a CAES member is the way it brings together like-minded individuals who all have different knowledge and experience.  To be able to discuss relevant topics with people who have a broad range of expertise within the field is very beneficial.”
